2018 Southland Academy Summer Camps

May:

S’more Camping Fun: (completed K4-K5); Mrs. Brock’s Room

The best days are spent camping! Get ready to kick off the summer at our crafty campground. Campers will explore the great outdoors through amazing books, creative crafts, outdoor adventures, and fun games. Campers will make bird feeders, go on a hiking scavenger hunt, use items from nature to make jewelry, and so much s’more!

Sights of Sumter: (completed 3rd-6th); Mrs. Duke’s Room

April Duke and Spring Minick

It will be time to create your Georgia History scrapbook before you know it. The sites of Sumter County must be included in your book and our county has so many interesting things to see. This tour of Sumter County will include historic sites in Americus, Andersonville, and Plains. Each day we will also visit a local restaurant to learn what goes on in the kitchen then eat lunch at that restaurant. Pictures from each stop will be emailed to each parent. We only have room for the first 20 to sign up, so get your name on the “tour bus” list! This learning adventure will be great fun!

Wrestling Camp: (completed 3rd-6th); Raider Gym

Wear appropriate clothing. Students will learn the fundamentals, proper technique, and effective strategies of wrestling. They will learn wrestling moves from all three starting positions and most importantly, how to wrestle safely.   Campers are encouraged to give maximum effort when wrestling and will be instructed how to wrestle the Southland way.

Raider Basketball; (completed 2nd-6th); Raider Gym

Wear appropriate clothing.

Boys and Girls will learn the rules of basketball and how to play the sport with proper technique. Campers will participate in free throw drills, Hot Spot, while learning ball handling drills, defensive form, and shooting technique. Campers are encouraged to give maximum effort while being instructed in a safe and orderly environment.

Pirates, Princes, and Princesses: (completed K3-K5); Preschool Building

Calling all pirates, princes, and princesses to gather in the land of royalty. Wear your royal clothing (optional) or your pirate garb (optional) and enjoy music, games, activities, and creative art! Hurry before the bridge is drawn or you may have to walk the plank, Matey!!

June:

GNO: Girls’ Night Out: (completed 2nd-5th)

G.N.O. with Mrs. Duke. Calling all girls who have completed grades 2-5! We will gather together for a night of fun! We will do a fun art project, play games, complete a community service project, paint our nails, have makeovers and celebrate being girls! Bring your sleeping bag, pillow, and toothbrush! Last one to sleep is a ROTTEN EGG! See you there!

Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead: (completed K3-K4); Preschool Building

Campers will blow up, eat up, soak up, and count away as they explore SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART & MATH. Campers need to bring one plastic water bottle, long white sock, and 2 rolls of masking tape.

Raider Baseball and Softball; (completed 3rd-6th); Raider Baseball and Softball Complex

The goal of the Raider baseball and softball programs is to provide personalized instruction along with motivating each player to improve his/her skills and knowledge of the game…The camp targets players of all skill levels including: hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, bunting, position play, and game strategy. Campers will interact and will be assisted by current varsity players.

Jump Ahead: (completed K4-1st); LS Computer Lab

Life Science STEM: Mrs. Buchanan’s LS Room

Campers will have fun building a tower garden. What a great way to learn a little math, science, and technology while discovering garden design!   You will be the first students to see the tower garden and learn all about indoor gardening. You will be so proud to see plants grow in your classroom in August!

Encourage and Build: LS Art Room

Campers will paint spunky birds stacked on a canvas. Scripture reference is 1 Thess. 5:11. Each camper will receive detailed instructions and assistance as they learn new techniques with acrylic paints and take home a masterpiece and a sweet treat!

Once Upon a Time: Preschool Building

Get ready to play, read, and explore while creating a new found love of books! Each day campers will enjoy building literacy skills through games, songs, and stories while using strategies to stimulate learning.

Raider Soccer: Raider Soccer Field

Wear appropriate clothing. The players will learn to do basic foot skills on the ball; two touch passing, and the rules of soccer.  They will play small sided games and learn soccer lingo.

Lego: Simple Machines; LS Science Lab

Mrs. Roquemore and Mrs. Peck

Bring: Creativity and imaginations; Legos are provided. Using LEGOS, campers will work in teams to complete build challenges.  They will use motors, gears, and sensors like the class workshops, BUT there will be a twist.  Campers will design and build their own LEGO creations.

American Girl Doll Experience; Mrs. Duke’s LS Room

We will have a Spa Day, Camping Day, and Tea Party with our dolls. Girls will glam up their dolls and enjoy their own “spa day.” On day two we will make sleeping bags and camp in tents with our dolls. On Day three we will learn table etiquette and have a tea party with our dolls. Each day will be packed with fun and adventure.

Story Time; Southland Media Center

Bring your summer reading log and get busy filling it up with stories like The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon, and Moses goes to Concert. Each Day we will read a story, create a craft and make a snack that goes with each book.

Can You Dig It?; LS Science Lab

Get ready to get wet, dirty, and have lots of fun planting. Each child will create a unique planter to take home and plant in their own garden. Bring a towel and sunscreen each day. Snack provided.

Movie Under the Stars Lock-In; (Academic Center if rain)

Drop-off at 7:00 pm and pick-up at 9:00 am. Supper and breakfast will be provided.

Plan a date night, bring your kids, and drop them off for pizza, movies, and fun. Students should bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

Escape Room: LS Building

Are you a genius? Let’s find out! Travel to Albany for Race 2 Escape.

Race 2 Escape is a brain game. Students are locked in a room (with our group) and have 60 minutes to complete a problem. Clues are in the room, must be found and used to solve the problem before time runs out! Fee includes: travel, ticket, and meal at Chick-fil-A.

Dinosaur Roar!: Preschool Building

Get ready to take a Jurassic journey while learning about dinosaurs. Campers will make fossils and have a spectacular dino dig. Join the dino team if you’re ready to STOMP AND ROAR!!

Raider Tennis Camp: Raider Tennis Courts

SAR Tennis campers will learn the basics of the game of tennis. Campers will learn racquet grip, groundstrokes to include forehand and backhand, serving, scorekeeping, and tennis etiquette. Campers will also learn basic strategy in singles and doubles matches and will compete in games in both areas. Bring a racquet and sunscreen; wear shorts and tennis shoes.

I Can Do All Things: LS Art Room

Campers will have a choice of a softball, baseball, football, or dance shoes; they will paint on a canvas. The scripture verse with be “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” or “Whatever you do …do for the glory of the Lord.” Campers will receive detailed instructions and assistance as they learn new techniques with acrylic paints. Campers will take their masterpieces home and enjoy a sweet treat.

“Cheer, Raiders, Cheer”; Raider Gym Lobby

Using the gym area and the football field, campers will learn basic cheer skills: jumps, chants, cheers, dances, and safety. All campers should wear t-shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes and bring a water bottle and small towel. Snacks, pompons, and signs will be provided. 

July:

Taste and See the Lord is Good; LS Art Room

Psalm 34:8. Campers will paint a cupcake on a canvas. Campers will receive detailed instructions and assistance as they learn new techniques with acrylic paints. Campers will take their masterpieces home and enjoy a sweet treat.

Playful Painters; Mrs. Saye’s K5 Room

Campers will learn about different artists (Monet, Kadinsky, Van Gogh), listen to music, paint each day, and bring home works of art. Snacks will be provided. Campers should bring a water bottle and paint shirt.

Let’s Bake; Preschool Building

Let’s get ready to mix, measure, and get messy! Campers will bake a variety of recipes and decorate a personal cake. They will have fun making an apron to take home along with their very own cookbook.

This Little Light of Mine; LS Art Room

Campers will paint a shining candle on a canvas. Campers will receive detailed instructions and assistance as they learn new techniques with acrylic paints. Campers will take their masterpieces home and enjoy a sweet treat.

Culinary Kids; HS Room 211 and Cafeteria

Campers will learn healthy choices, good manners, and safe, clean kitchen practices with an age-appropriate approach. They will have hands on exploration of science in cooking including do-it-yourself snacks! Campers will make personal pizzas from scratch, decorate desserts and conduct a kitchen experiment. The culinary experience includes science, math, language arts, history, geography, cultural arts, and more. There may even be a culinary field trip (TBA). Chefs must bring their favorite recipes!

Refresh with Pete the Cat

REFRESH those skills you learned during school with this 3 day camp. Come along with Pete the Cat as we review letters, blends and words, count and measure our way to fun!

Raider Football Camp; Raider gym on the first day

Students may wear tennis shoes or cleats (if available). Shorts are fine and pads are not necessary. The young Raiders will work hard and learn some basic football fundamentals of catching, throwing, and playing the game of football. 

Brain Refresh!: LS Art Room

Students will be refreshed on what they learned during the school year. They will have a refresher in language and math as and be introduced to new concepts for the approaching academic grade. Students will be involved in hands on games/centers to enhance their learning.
