Mia and Samuel Hughes give heartfelt prayers for veterans.

The 2020-2021 school year marks the 10th year that Southland Academy Lower School students have held a Veterans Day Program to honor our veterans. Unfortunately, Southland was unable to host veterans and their families along with the community and our Southland families on campus due to our adherence to the COVID-19 protocol. While this Veterans Day tribute was not face to face, please know that you are most assuredly in our hearts.

The faculty and students in grades K3-5th grades held a Red, White, and Blue Day in honor of our veterans. The students performed patriotic songs and pledged the flag of the United States of America. Fifth grade students held a very dignified Posting of the Colors while the student body observed. Also, the rendering of TAPS was a reverent moment.   Students also delivered speeches honoring veterans, explaining the origin of TAPS and the history and significance of Veterans Day, as well as educating their peers of the POW/MIA table and chair. Even though the students had no other audience besides their classmates and teachers, they were extremely proud to honor the brave men and women as well as their families, who have selflessly and loyally served this nation: veterans, active-duty service members, guardsmen and reservists. Southland Academy believes that children are never too young to understand how and why our freedoms exist.

Veterans, thank you and your families for your sacrifices. We hope that you know how much you truly mean to us, our community, and our nation.   On behalf of Southland Academy, on this Veterans Day, November 11, 2020, we thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and for representing the foundations of the United States of America. Even though we are socially distanced, we are still united. God bless Veterans everywhere.
