The personal finance class at Southland Academy was honored to have Southland alumnus Chad Roland of Chambliss, Sheppard, Roland and Associates, LLP, visit the class recently. His presentation was very informative and interesting. He explained the basics of the students’ filling out a tax return and emphasized the ease of doing it online because of the probability of their limited income. He encouraged them to communicate with their parents before doing any type of filing of taxes on their own.

Other topics discussed were the difference in the W2 Form and the 1099 Form, progressive tax, and passive activity loss. Pros and cons concerning inheritance tax vs a gift tax were also explained. In general, the students were encouraged to begin saving for retirement at an early age.

The students were attentive and posed some great questions for Mr. Roland. He was very patient answering their questions. We thank Mr. Roland for sharing his time and expertise with the class. The personal finance class is taught by Mrs. Judy Wills.
