Southland Academy K3 students look forward to their STEAM activities each week. STEAM is an inter-disciplinary approach to learning, and having STEAM kids that are well rounded and focused on hands on projects will encourage a natural curiosity which leads to a natural creativity.  After the K3 students "explored" the world of space, they were eager to see the experiment.  The teachers chose the Mentos in the Soda experiment as the conclusion of "Astronaut Week."  The physical reaction between the fizzy carbonation that is pumped into the soda and the layers of sugar coating on the Mentos candy is called “Nucleation” in the science world.  As the Mentos makes their way to the bottom of the soda, these foamy bubbles have no other place to go, except to cause an epic eruption out of the top of the soda bottle, simulating the blasting of a rocket! The student shrilled in excitement and amazement as the soda blew into space just as the rocket that carries the astronauts.
