The Southland Academy Junior Varsity Cheerleading squad captured awards at the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) Summer Camp held at the University of Georgia in Athens recently. UCA is the oldest and largest cheerleading association in the world, and its goal is to inspire leadership on and off the field by providing high quality educational training for college, high school, and middle school cheerleaders.

Southland Junior Varsity Cheerleaders competed with 20 other cheer squads totaling about 250 girls from the entire state of Georgia. The girls participated in three days of learning new cheers, chants, dances, safety, pyramids, and stunts. Final competitions took place on the fourth and final day.

The Junior Varsity squad secured a Superior Trophy for their overall performance at camp, winning all gold and blue ribbons on cheer and dance evaluations all week, plus they placed first in Sideline Chant and third in the Band Dance Competition. In addition, the Junior Varsity squad shared the highest spirit award at camp, “The Banana,” with the Southland Varsity squad.

There were also individual awards throughout the week. Southland had two girls named as All Americans for the Middle School Division: Eighth Graders Ella Arnold and Lily Haugabook. In addition, 8th Grader Tate Young received the prestigious Pin-It Forward Award. Pin-It Forward Awards are for outstanding positive mental attitudes and leadership throughout the entire 4-day camp. Eighth Grader Lily Haugabook and 7th Grader Mia Mixon also participated in the Jump-Off Competition for the Middle School Division.

The Southland Junior Varsity squad members are 8th Graders Ella Arnold, Scarlett Carey, Lainey Collier, Lily Haugabook, Anna Grace Horne, Taylor Ragsdale, Eva Grace Studdard, and Tate Young; 7th Graders include Camie Cochran, Kylee Ann Crawford, Julia Clare Hubbard, Sydney Joiner, and Mia Mixon.

Mrs. Shay Torbert is the Southland Junior Varsity Cheerleading Coach and Advisor. Mrs. Torbert also attended camp and participated in a coaches’ workshop for cheerleading techniques and safety.
