Southland's Swim Team competed January 26th & 27th at the GISA State Swim Meet held at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia.

Our Southland Junior Varsity placed a close 2nd place in the team standings this past Friday evening immediately behind 1st place August Preparatory Day School.   Placing in events were the following individuals and events: 

McClain Cummins 5th in Boys 100 IM                                     Joseph Cornwell 5th and Eric Bruns 7th in 50 Free

Aaron Pryor 4th and Devon Varnum 5th in 50 Yard Fly

Aaron Pryor 7th in 50 backstroke

Steven Ledbetter 4th, McClain Cummins 5th and Eric Bruns 6th in 50-Yard Breast

And a 1st place in the Boys 200 Yard Free Relay made up of Cornwell, Cummins, Pryor and Bruns.

Our Southland Varsity Swim Team placed high in several events during Saturday’s competition:

Jay Buchanan placed 7th in 200 yard free

Heidi Bruns 8th in 50-Yard Freestyle

Jay Buchanan 4th and Athan Cheokas 6th in 50-Yard Freestyle

Heidi Bruns 7th in 100 Freestyle

Athan Cheokas 8th in 100 Freestyle

Heidi Bruns 7th in 100 Breaststroke

Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay placed 6th overall made up of Buchanan, Ledbetter, Driggers and Cheokas

 

The Southland Academy swimming teams opened their season Saturday hosting the Raider Open Swim Meet at Georgia Southwestern State University ’s Deriso Pool.  The Raider boys varsity placed second in the meet, behind Deerfield Windsor while the girls varsity finished third in the team scoring after Deerfield and Sherwood Christian.

            Jay Buchanan ended the meet with a perfect four wins in four events, taking the 50 yard freestyle (24.86), 100 yard freestyle (55.72), 100 yard backstroke (1:08.15) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:21.25).  Chris Driggers helped with second place points in the 100 freestyle (1:02.43) and 100 breaststroke (1:22.35).  Buchanan’s performances would have placed him among the top eight at last year’s GISA Championship meet.

            Ali Michael led the scoring for the Southland girls, taking 4th place in the 100 freestyle (1:20.25), 100 backstroke (1:38.96) and 100 breaststroke (1:54.56).

            The junior varsity teams faired well with the boys team winning two relays and the team title and the girls team placing second in the team scoring.
