SOPHOMORE COMPOSITION

This class is an intermediate composition course with an emphasis on structure, style, integration of research, and grammar and mechanics.  The course will address such areas as topic development, introductions, clear and effective support, appropriate conclusions, and MLA format using Microsoft Word applications and Internet research skills on various assignments.  The student will write in several expository modes:  descriptive, narrative, cause and effect, and comparison/contrast.  Special emphasis will be placed on argumentation as preparation for the writing component of the SAT.

Missed Assignments

It is the student's responsibility to complete all assignments regardless of the reason the assignment was missed.  Since all essay assignments must be completed with teacher supervision, the student must make arrangements to meet with the teacher at a specified time. ESSAYS COMPLETED WITHOUT TEACHER SUPERVISION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT.  Assignments are posted on the Southland website.

Evaluations

Students will be evaluated in several areas:  prewriting activities, notebook checks, homework assignments and quizzes, and completed essays. Grades are calculated as follows:                                        daily and quiz     40%

                                                     finished papers    60%

Supplies

Students are expected to be prepared for class each day with several number 2 pencils with erasers; a notebook (loose leaf binder with regular rule paper); his own data saving device (floppy drive, flash drive, etc.); and the required textbook, Elements of Writing, Fifth Course.
