The personal finance class at Southland Academy was honored to have Southland alumnus Danny Minick, Executive Vice-President, Citizens Bank of Americus, visit the class recently. His presentation was very informative and interesting. He explained the importance of budgeting as it can teach an individual good financial discipline, help individuals obtain goals, and be an asset to financial planning.

Other topics discussed were some pros and cons of using student loans. Mr. Minick encouraged the students to simply be cautious when applying for student loans. Identity Theft Protection was greatly emphasized in his presentation. The use of digital banking was explained. The students heard how a Credit Bureau Report, or financial report card, can be affected both positively and negatively.

Mr. Minick concluded his presentation with some important reminders to the students.

 (1) Never overdraw your account. (2) Save some money in a Savings or Money Market—preferably enough for three months of unexpected expenses. (3) Never pay loans late. (4) Do not max out credit cards. (5) Check for fraud daily in your account. (6) Never give your debit card pin number to anyone. (7) If you lose your credit or debit card—cancel it immediately. (8) If you are traveling, notify your bank and/or credit card company so that your cards will not be declined.

The students were attentive and posed some great questions for Mr. Minick. He was very patient and knowledgeable when answering their questions. We thank Mr. Minick for sharing his time and expertise with the class. The personal finance class is taught by Mrs. Judy Wills.
