The Kindergarten classes at Southland Academy enjoyed a wonderful field trip last week to the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm in Plains, GA. Students, parents, and teachers enjoyed learning about President Carter’s dear friends who lived next door and worked on the farm, Rachel and Jack Clark. Our Park Ranger told us that Mrs. Clark taught young President Carter (Jimmy) how to fish, which has been a lifelong hobby for him. We enjoyed meeting the mules on the farm and seeing the goats and chickens too. The children learned about some of President Carter’s boyhood daily chores and were able to grind corn for the chickens. The children sorted seeds as the Rangers told them about the fruitful garden on the farm. We visited the home where President Carter lived as a child, and we picnicked in Plains at the park area near the Depot. The students enjoyed learning the history of the young President Carter, who is well-known around the world, but is still one of our local Sumter Countians.
