The Southland Academy Varsity Cheerleading squad continued the tradition of capturing all the top awards at Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) Summer Camp held at the University of Georgia in Athens recently. UCA is the oldest and largest cheerleading association in the world, and its goal is to inspire leadership on and off the field by providing high quality educational training for college, high school, and middle school cheerleaders.

Southland Varsity Cheerleaders competed with 20 other cheer squads totaling about 250 girls from the entire state of Georgia. The girls participated in three days of learning new cheers, chants, dances, pyramids, and stunts. Final competitions took place on the fourth day.

The Varsity squad secured a Superior Trophy for their overall performance at camp and placed first in Band Chant/Sideline Chant and first in the Dance Competition. The Varsity squad also received the runner-up trophy for the Cheer Competition. The Southland Varsity squad took home the coveted and only Leadership Award, voted on by all the cheer squads at camp. In addition, the Varsity squad took home the highest spirit award, “The Banana.”

There were also individual awards throughout the week. Junior Emma Griffin made it to the final round of the Jump-Off, runner-up to the Jump-Off winner, a boy. Also participating in the Jump-Off on the High School Level were Senior Kara Hubbard, Junior Sarah Murphy, and Freshman Lydia Anne Love. Southland had four girls named as All Americans for the second year in a row: Seniors Anslee Barnes, Mary Catherine Dean, Morgan Deriso, and Kara Hubbard. All four Seniors were asked to be camp staffers for next Summer with U.C.A.

In addition, Seniors Morgan Deriso and Mary Catherine Dean, and Sophomore Jordan Brehm received the prestigious Pin-It Forward Award. Pin-It Forward Awards are for outstanding positive mental attitudes and leadership throughout the entire 4-day camp.

The Southland Varsity squad members are Seniors Anslee Barnes, Mary Catherine Dean, Morgan Deriso, and Kara Hubbard; Juniors Ellie Barnes, Maddy Copeland, Leslie Anne Farr, Emma Griffin, Sarah Murphy, Parker Reeves, and Halley Kate Turner; Sophomores Jordan Brehm, Carson Clements, Addison Starlin, and Georgia Torbert; and Freshmen Lydia Anne Love and Averi Smith. Mrs. Susan Welch is the long-time Varsity Cheerleading Coach and Advisor. Mrs. Welch also attended camp and participated in a coaches’ workshop for cheerleading techniques and safety.
